Greco’s EighteentH General Activity Report

Greco, the anti-corruption body of the Council of Europe, has published its Eighteenth General Activity Report for 2017 year.

The 18th report provides an account about corruption in Europe and the United States. It depicts particular situations related to the corruption within the states, shows the level of implementation of Greco’s recommendations, and provides examples of good practices, as well as examples of bad practices.

The president of Greco, Marin Mrčela, Vice-President of the Supreme Court of Croatia, said: “2017 was a “dark year” for anti-corruption. Many allegations of corruption or actions against probity in public and private organisations have eroded people’s trust in them. Judges have been dismissed or imprisoned and the independent and impartial work of many prosecutors has been undermined; election campaigns have been polluted by corruption allegations; and journalists covering corruption have been silenced, imprisoned or killed.”

Although 2017 was a difficult year for the fight against corruption, not everything is black. There are still good practices and countries that can serve as a very good example, like Slovenia. The Supreme Court of Slovenia is in charge for adopting new technologies into Slovenia’s judiciary. Court registers are now entirely computerized and publicly available, which led to public trust in the judiciary of Slovenia.
